What is the Difference between Hardscape and Softscape?

Landscape design can be divided into two: hardscape design and softscape design. Most landscape design businesses offer both the services. Though hardscaping and softscaping are opposites of each other, both the components are essential for making your landscape ideal and fully functional. Let’s explain what each term means and how one differs from the other.

What is hardscaping?

Hardscape are hard and solid design elements that remain the same for many years. For example, a highly hardscaped front yard may involve a paved driveway like a hotel. Typically, hardscaping is a bigger project than softscaping. The main features of hardscape elements are:

  • They are hard and inanimate but movable;

  • They are solid and unchanging;

  • They can be natural (such as a stone) or man-made (such as a planter or an outdoor structure)

Hardscape designs use a number of different materials, including:

Concrete:Concrete is the most common and most durable patio surfaces. Decorative concrete patios can be stamped, stained and etched. The advantage of concrete is that it doesn’t need much attention and maintenance.

Bricks: Bricks are composed of clay soil mixed with lime and sand. It is available in several different colors including grey, cream, red, tan, pink, brown, black and buff. However, red bricks are the most common and traditional.

Flagstone: The natural stone used in patios and walkways is known as flagstone. It is usually set in stone dust or sand. Generally flagstones can be moved easily.

Slate: Slate is a naturally-occurring metamorphic rock. It is commonly used as an exterior paving material, especially in areas near slate quarries.

Here are some examples of hardscape designs:

  • Patios

  • Driveways

  • Decks

  • Water features

  • Outdoor Kitchens

  • Stairs and walkways

  • Retaining walls

What is Softscaping?

Softscape comprises the living ( animate), horticultural elements of landscape design. Things that can be placed within a softscape include plants, trees, flowers, turf, ground covering and shrubs. Ideally, a good, well-designed landscape incorporates a balance between hardscape and softscape.

Within a softscape, some plants, such as shrubs and some trees that remain consistent all through the year, may be permanent. But people change softscape designs more often. You may change the plant design every year or even more often than that. On the other hand, once a hardscape such as a patio has been installed, it will be kept for a long time – may be up to 10 years or even more.

Hardscape Design vs. Softscape Design

Though hardscaping and softscaping are two different types of landscaping, a good landscaping incorporates both. Both of them should complement each other to create a beautiful balance. While you need hardscape design to form the core of the landscaping, you can’t complete the design without softscaping elements such as plants and flowers. A good landscaper always designs the landscape using hardscape as well as softscape to create a perfect balance.

Here are some landscaping ideas in which hardscaping and softscaping can be used together:

  • Covering a pergola or trellis with vines;
  • Lining plants or flowers along a walkway or driveway;
Installing turf on part of a veranda, patio, or dec
